On this 8th of March, the Federation of Korean Trade Unions(FKTU) held the National Women Workers' Convention in commemoration with the 105th International Women's Day.
Under the themes of 'Fair Society with Equal Wings throughout Participation, Communication and Action', the Convention was organized with the aim of achieving it's 5 objectives; ▲increasing job security and decent work for women; ▲strengthening policies for work-life balance based on gender equality; ▲reinforcing the public responsibility for child care and enlarging child care facilities; ▲enhancing the quality of women workers' lives by working hour reduction; ▲building up safer workplace without any sexual harassment and violence.
Mr. MOON Jinkook, the President of the FKTU, pointed out in his opening remark the fact that the unfavorable situation to women workers has been much worsened. "During the last 5 years, rather the life of a woman worker has been significantly deteriorated, and social polarization as well as poverty within women workers have been more accelerated. After the implementation of the time-off limit for union activities by union officials 3 years ago, the trade union movement has been markedly weakened and consequently women workers' activities in trade unions have been further reduced.", he said.
He also said, "FKTU keeps strongly urging the government to take more affirmative actions for women workers and to create more decent works for them" and "A gender-equal society where women are fairly and equally treated and work as much as possible in their own ability without any discrimination and prejudice against them must be realized."
At the Convention, the FKTU adopted 'Proposal for Realization of A Gender-euqal Society' which recommends ▲implementing welfare policies to mitigate social polarization and women's poverty, ▲raising awareness of social and economic benefit from women's participation in economic activities, ▲finding and cultivating women leaders, ▲firming up policies for work-life balance, ▲strengthening international solidarity to achieve gender equality, ▲expanding women's participation and promoting gender equality in the trade union movement.
Also the Convention adopted a resolution urging ▲the prioritization of job security of women workers and the creation of decent works for women, ▲the conversion of 200,000 women non-regular workers in the public sector into regular employment, ▲the reinforcement of public responsibility for child care through increasing national and public child care facilities by 30%, ▲ the full paid maternity leave for a spouse and the quota system for father's child-care leave, ▲the expansion and the empowerment of women's organizations.
Brother Noriyuki Suzuki, the General Secretary of ITUC-AP, sent a solidarity message to strongly support for FKTU's objectives for gender equality and to hope that the Convention would be another key milestone for the FKTU's action for gender equality in Korea.
