FKTU observes its 67th Anniversary of Foundation.
The Federation of Korean Trade Unions(FKTU) celebrated the 67th anniversary of its foundation and organised a fund-raising event on 7th March at the FKTU HQ in Seoul.
Brother MOON Jinkook, the President of the FKTU, said in his memorial speech, "We has been witnessing serious social turmoil and community as laid off workers are committing suicide one after another and many families are being disorganized. In this difficult situation, I cannot help emphasizing again a very pivotal role of the FKTU in order for the Korean society to take off again. The FKTU, as it has been doing, will further strengthen and expand the grassroots-oriented trade union movement with the people."
He then made the role of the FKTU clear by saying, "We are not only struggling for our workers by achieving the reduction of working hours, the improvement of National Wage System, the abolishment of any discrimination against precarious workers and the increase of job security but we also make all-out efforts to support as well as speak for youth, women and elderly who are neglected and socially vulnerable people of our society."
He also reaffirmed FKTU's position on the revision of 'Trade Unions and Labour Relations Adjustment Act (TULRAA)'. He pointed out "Existence of a trade union and rational industrial relations in Korean society have been threatened by compulsory implementation of the paid time off limit for a union officials, which makes fundamental workers' rights and union activities are in grave peril." Then he emphasized that activities of a full-time union official should be guaranteed as a fundamental workers' right so that TULRAA must be revised to observe the principle of the autonomy of labour and management and also the Ministry of Employment and Labour must stop their interference.
He concluded his speech by saying, "As the driving force of the workforce and the responsible agent of economic and social movements, the FKTU will make every effort to forster the grassroots-oriented labour movement for integration and advancement of Korean society". Then he proposed the sincere tripartite dialogue.
At the ceremony, many public figures of all levels of society attended and congratulated on FKTU's 67th birthday. All fund raised during the event was donated to 'Sunlin Welfare Foundation' established in November 2007 by the FKTU for conducting socially responsible activities such as social welfare service, disaster relief, donations to welfare facilities, etc.
