The FKTU decided to cancel the National Workers' Rally to be held on May Day, in which 100,000 union members are expected to join, in its Central Executive Committtee Meeting, mourning for the victims of Sewol Ferry disaster.
KIM Dong-man, President of the FKTU, announced during the Meeting, “We decided to cancel the rally in order to share griefs and pains with all affected people including 22 union members' children although there are a lot of urgent issues to be resolved including working hours, ordinary wage fundamental workers' rights, etc."
Instead, the FKTU will pay tribute to the victims in the joint funeral hall in Ansan and participate in volunteer activities and fundraising.
The Meeting also adopted a resolution on the following.
-We urge the government to do everything possible to ensure the safe return of missing people and the full support for the bereaved families.
-We blame the Ministry of Security and Public Administration and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, key government agencies responsible for the disaster, for their poor management and inconsistent policies. We are strongly opposed to the so-called "parachuted appointments" for high-level positions in the government agencies and public sector.
-We recognize that this accident mainly resulted from deregulation and call upon the government to tighten regulations.
-We will make every effort for the normalization and full-scale reforms of the Korean society.
