The Year 2012. Let`s Have a Hope
Dear sisters and brothers.
Let me begin by thanking you all for doing such a great job last year despite the severe ordeals and sufferings under the pro-business and anti-labour regime which only serves one percent of the population. Especially. last year was full of hardships including a sharp rise in comsumer prices. skyrocketing housing costs and job insecurity amid economic turmoils which have lasted for a couple of years. Now. the Year of the Dragon has just dawned. Greeting the new year. we would like to talk about ˝Hope˝. The ˝hope˝ of the FKTU is ˝solidarity˝.
Last year. the union density dropped to single digits for the first time in history. Organized workers also suffered a lot from the retrogressive revision of the Trade Unions and Labor Relations Adjustment Act (TULRAA) over the issues of time-off for trade union activities and compulsory single bargaining channels. Especially. the compulsory single bargaining channels which have come into effect since July last year added great sufferings to trade union movement. resulting in the restrictions of the right to collective bargaining. acute conflicts among unions. organizational confusions. unfair labour practices. the annulment of collective bargaining agreements. etc.
Against the backdrop. we have kept the flag flying for the complete revision of the TULRAA. We have been determined to judge those politicians who are opposed to the revision of the law. The flag will continue to fly through this year. from strength to strength.
Let us all unite under the banner of workers` struggles! Let us fight in strong solidarity! Let us win the struggles for the revision of the TULRAA! The history of victory is always with us.
Dear sisters and brothers.
Another ˝hope˝ for the FKTU in 2012 is ˝solidarity˝. The Democratic United Party (DUP) has been officially launched. All the democratic and progressive movement has joined forces with the DUP and the FKTU is at the forefront of the new Party. We have incorporated our own solutions and alternatives to various social and labour issues in the platform. constitution and standing orders of the new Party
We will accomplish our motto. ˝social reformist trade unionism˝. and build an ˝equal welfare society˝ in which all working people are valued and respected through the new party. We will carry out policies which are beneficial not only for the 1.6 million workers but for all Korean people. This includes the revision of TULRAA. the elimination of discrimination against precarious workers. raising the minimum wage to a realistic level. the improvement of working hours. etc.
We. working people. have always been alienated. excluded or marginalized from politics although everyone talks about the importance of ˝labour˝. However. the launch of the DUP. the most leading and promising opposition party. will be the prominent landmark for the political empowerment of the FKTU. We have just taken the first steps in politics. Your participation and cooperation are urgently needed for us to take firm steps and move forward.
Dear Sisters and Brothers.
Let`s have a hope. 2012 will be a year where FKTU`s hope. workers` hope can be materialized and the current anti-labour government will kneel down in front of workers.
Let us overcome small differences and be prepared with strong solidarity! Let us build a new world in which all workers are treated with respect and dignity. The FKTU will take the lead in that mission. I wish you a happy and prosperous new year. Thank you.
President of the FKTU
