`HYUNDAY Engineering & Construction(Hyundai E&C)` was chosen as `The Most Murderous Enterprise in 2012`. Also `STX Offshore & Shipbuilding` and `TK Chemical` jointly won the shameful first prize in manufacturing sector. and `Samsung Electronics` was given `Special Award` by netizen votes.
The Federation of Korean Trade Unions(FKTU) together with `Joint Campaigning Group for Measure against Industrial Death` organized a press conference on 26th April in Seoul and announce `the list of most murderous enterprises in 2012` and urged adequate measures to protect death by industrial accidents and diseases.
The death by industrial accidents and diseases occurring in the course of enterprise`s profit making can be defined as `a conduct of murder` since the death was caused by negligence of an enterprise violating as well as neglecting its duties(including legal duties) or responsibility for implementing safety measures and investing in industrial accidents prevention in workplace. So `Murderous Enterprise` is named for any enterprise having engaged in these scandalous conducts. The selection criteria is based on ministry-announced death toll of industrial accidents and diseases in previous year. In 2012. the most murderous enterprise in constructing sector and also as a whole is `HYUNDAI E&C` and in manufacturing sector is `STX Offshore & Shipbuilding`.
At the Press Conference. HYUNDAI E&C`s recent corporate image promotions about receiving one of CR Reporting Awards was criticised by saying ˝they has advertised the award winning as the first construction company in the world. Having considered the fact that HYUNDAI E&C has been selected the most murderous enterprise twice in 2012 as well as 2007. however. we are in very doubt about their qualification of the awards.˝.
Then it was said. ˝if their sustainability report does not contain any necessary factual information such as the death tolls and future preventive measures. Corporate Register. the independent. private reference point for corporate responsibility reports and resources. should disqualify them from the award.˝.
Also among Samsung Electronics. Ssangyong Motors. KT and Korail which have caused serious social concerns due to many workers` death. Samsung Electronics was voted for the special award by online vote from 18th April to 25th April.
Mr. YOO Youngchul. Vice-president of the FKTU. pointed out the problem of current regulation imposing a very light punishment of few million won as fine to those who takes lives of workers by negligence and violation. He strongly criticised by saying. ˝Since introducing The Most Murderous Enterprise Awards in 1996. Many corporations has been repeatedly selected without any improvement or changes. This only results from no strict and proper punishment to these murderous enterprises.˝ Then he urged to enforce corporations` social responsibility for workers` health and safety as well as to introduce a new act to punish enterprises responsible for death of workers by industrial accidents and diseases.
The FKTU will continuously conduct various activities to raise awareness about seriousness of industrial accidents and diseases among workers. employers and public. to guarantee workers` rights to health and safety. to enforce social responsibility of corporations and to improve laws and institutions to punish adequately and strictly murderous enterprises.
